The story in 1 Kings 17 was a favorite of mine as a child. The miracle of the flour and the oil that never ran out always made me full of wonder. What a good and faithful God! Now, as a single mom, the story feels even more personal.
S: 1 Kings 17:14-15 “For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’” She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.
O: In chapter 17, Elijah is obeying God’s command and trusting in God’s provisions for the necessities of life, like food and water. His obedience requires full trust. Early in the chapter, God provides water through a brook, and food is delivered by raven. Then, God sends Elijah to a single mother, a widow who lives in Zarephath. The widow has very little to feed herself and her son- saying she has only enough to feed them one last meal before they will die. But Elijah implores her to trust that God will provide for him and for them. Elijah vows that if she feeds him, there will be more than enough for all three. She puts her trust in Elijah’s word, and discovers God’s faithfulness to provide. The widow obeys and God is true to His word. The flour and oil jar continue to provide all that the three of them need to live. *Continue to read to the end of the chapter and discover a second miraculous blessing this single mother receives from God through Elijah.
A: As a single mom, I identify with the woman in this story. The burden resting solely on her shoulders to provide for her child. How desperate this mother must have been, to hold nearly empty jars in her hands and to see only enough flour and oil to provide one final meal for herself and her child. She knew the inevitable outcome- with nothing to eat and no way to find food, they would die. Then God sends someone to her- someone who needs her help, but also someone who is her salvation. He promises that His God will provide if she was willing to take what little she had and give it away. What a leap of faith!!! God reveals that He is worthy of our trust. God asks me to place my trust in Him too. When I trust and obey, I experience peace in God’s provision for my family.
P: God, thank you for providing all that I need. Guide me to walk in obedience. Help me to put my trust in you and you alone. Thank you for using a single mom, so long ago, to reveal the truth of your goodness to me. Amen.
