Ministry & Serving Opportunities
We have a number of opportunities for you to serve alongside others from Cherry Hills. To find out more, click here.
Easter & Good Friday
On Good Friday, March 30th we’ll gather at 5:30 & 7:30 p.m. in the Worship Center. We will gather for a Tenebrae service to remember and reflect on what Jesus has done for us. The word Tenebrae simply means “shadows” or “darkness” in Latin. We will hear the passion story retold as candles are extinguished as we move from light to dark in the room. The service will end with communion in silence.
Parents: Childcare is available for ages birth to Kindergarten for both services (note the increase in age!). Good Friday is one of three special services we look forward to every year where we gather as families, but we want to make you aware that this service will be like the Good Friday services we’ve done the past few years. The service will have a more somber tone, the room will gradually get darker, and we will ask people to enter and exit in silence.
Then on Easter Sunday morning, April 1st, join us for any of our regular service times: 8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.—3 identical services (children’s ministry is offered at 9:30 & 11:00).
We pray this information is helpful as you plan. And please join us as we pray for these special services.
Lent Prayer Guide

Lent (like Advent) is a season in the Christian Church calendar. Lent is a 6 week period before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. This season of Lent is a time for us to examine our relationship with Christ and to dedicate ourselves to moving from shallow to maturity in our faith. In addition, Easter Sunday is much more meaningful if we prepare ourselves, culminating in Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Watch this video to learn more.
A word on fasting… fasting is a spiritual practice that allows us to draw near to God and depend on Him for our provision. Fasting was a common practice among God’s chosen people (Ex. 34:38; 2 Sam. 12:16; 1 Kings 19:8; Ps. 35:13; Joel 1:14; Jon. 3:5). Jesus also fasted and so did his disciples. He did not command his followers to fast; he assumed they would fast and gave them directions on how to fast in Matthew 6:17. We will be practicing the spiritual discipline of fasting (from food) corporately as a church each Wednesday for those who feel led to participate. You can choose to fast longer than one day, perhaps for only 1-2 meals on the day, or if Wednesdays don’t work for you, you might choose another day of the week on which to fast. The goal is simply to seek the Lord together as a church as we prepare for Easter. If you have any medical concerns, please consult your doctor before practicing fasting.
Each Tuesday leading up to Easter you will receive the prayer guide for the week in the e-newsletter (email firstname.lastname@example.org to receive the newsletter if you aren’t already). In addition, you will be able to find the prayer guide as a link on our social media accounts and on the wall by the Ministry Center in the lobby.
First Step Begins March 25th
If you’re new, or you want to learn more about Cherry Hills, we invite you to join us for 8 weeks as you meet the pastors, meet new people, and learn about who we are as a church. First Step begins Sunday, March 25th and meets at 11:00 a.m. in Room E204. There is only space for 25 people, so please sign up by contacting the church office (546-4818 or email@example.com).
Blended & Blessed Simulcast
We are starting a few small groups for Blended Families (step-families, single parents, and other non-nuclear families). We walk through life best when we are connected and challenged in relationships, especially with the unique aspects of blended family life. We are launching these groups with a one-day Simulcast, Blended & Blessed. This Simulcast will explore topics related to the challenges blended families face.
Lunch and snacks will be provided. No childcare is provided. You may sign up here or call the church office (546-4818).
If you are interested in joining a small group, but are not able to attend the event, email or call the church office (firstname.lastname@example.org or 546-4818).
Come have fun while supporting our students Saturday, March 24th from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at The Rock. Get your teams of up to 10 people together now ($10 per person) as we have limited space available for this benefit. Registration envelopes are at the Ministry Center and should be returned to the church office by Sunday, March 18th. Pre-ordered pizzas will be available for $12 each.
Each year summer camp is a milestone event in students’ lives that help them become H3 disciples of Jesus. Trivia Night is an opportunity for our church family to tangibly invest in the discipleship of the next generation by helping them go to camp.
Cherry Hills feels it is important to encourage our college students to be salt and light on their campuses. The Reverend Gary & Janie Nelsen Higher Education Scholarship annually awards students for maintaining a Christ-centered lifestyle and becoming an active part of a campus Christian organization or local church ministry. The Nelsen Scholarship is open to any full-time student entering their junior or senior year of college. Click here for the application.
Cherry Hills also feels it is important to encourage and support students who have been called to full-time Christian service, such as pastoral or missionary service. The Christian Service Scholarship is open to college juniors or seniors, graduate students, or individuals attending specific service training programs. Click here for the application.
All scholarship applicants must be members of Cherry Hills, and students may not receive both scholarships. All application materials must be submitted to the church office no later than April 1, 2018.
If you would like to help our college students by designating a monetary gift to either of these two scholarship funds, please feel free to do so.
Thursday Evening Women’s Study
SOUL KEEPING by John Ortberg
March 15- April 26, 2018 6:30-8:30pm – Large Group Teaching with small group discussion Room 203 at Cherry Hills.
RSVP to Kathy Hall at email@example.com to reserve a spot in group
Your soul’s resting place is in God -but do you know anything about your soul’s health? Do you regularly feed it and nurture it in the WORD, so it can be restored after battling with the World? A healthy soul is in harmony with God. He is the prize of your soul. Not His direction or guidance. Not even His comfort, relief or encouragement. Just Him. He is the One who encompasses all you are searching for. God wants to speak to you because He wants you to know Him. Learn how to hear Him more clearly by paying attention to The WORD and your own soul’s thirst for The Living Water.
This 6 week study includes DVD teaching and small group discussion. We will find our soul’s resting place in the Lord and His Word by studying Psalms and discussing in small groups the way to attend to Him.
Inclement Weather Plan
As we move into the winter season, there may be those rare occasions when it’s necessary to cancel Sunday Services or other activities. Please be sure to check the homepage of our website, Facebook or Instagram page, or call the main church telephone line (217) 546-4818 for updates. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding if we ever find it necessary to reschedule or cancel events at Cherry Hills.
